Xiong Shili
Xiong Shili ( 熊十力 , Xióng Shílì , Hsiung Shih-li ; born 1885 ; died 1968 ), hào : Zizhen 子 真 , was an important Chinese philosopher. He was a representative of the new idealistic Confucianism.
life and work
Xiong was from Huanggang in Hubei Province . He was involved in the Xinhai Revolution , which ended the Qing Dynasty . He worked for the Republican Army and Government. For a few years he studied Buddhism under Ouyang Jingwu 歐陽 竟 無 (1871-1943), then he turned to Confucianism . From 1923 he taught his new teaching of consciousness only at Peking University . His theory combined elements of the Book of Changes ( I Ching ), the neo-Confucian Lu-Wang school and the consciousness-only school of Mahayana Buddhism . His theory found expression in his major work A New Treatise on Vijñaptimātra ( Xin weishi lun ), a Confucian criticism of the Buddhist Vijñapti-mātra theory of “consciousness only”, which was written in China by the pilgrim Xuanzang (c. 602–664) at the time of Tang Dynasty was made popular.
According to his main thesis, “Reality or the universe is a whole. Its basic nature, namely that of the spirit, the will and the consciousness, is eternal and permanent. It is dynamic, a huge constant stream of change that is in the process of constant transformation, creating and reproducing all things ”.
