Xyloband

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A xyloband is a bracelet that contains LEDs and radio receivers. The lights in the bracelet can be controlled by software that sends signals to the bracelet, causing it to light up or blink. The RGB version has a white band and can display any color on the color spectrum. The monochrome version is available in green, blue, yellow, red, pink and white. Xylobands were first used on a larger scale on Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto Tour in 2012. Each spectator got a xylo tape, which flashed to the beat of the music during the concert.

Jason Regulator, the inventor of the bracelets, said that the idea came to him at a Coldplay concert during the song Fix You .

The bracelets themselves are made of a thick fabric in which LEDs are incorporated. A radio receiver is built into a plastic housing in the band and receives wireless signals from a controller. These signals are transmitted either by a hand-held controller similar to a TV remote control (range = 250 m) or a controller on a laptop with a radio transmitter (range = up to 900 m). The operator of the controller or the software can program all bracelets or only those with certain colors to flicker at certain moments. The bracelets are not intended to continue to light up outside the venue.

Xylobands

Every viewer of Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto Tour in 2012 received one of the monochrome ribbons. While the music was playing, the tapes blinked, creating a colorful light show. The Washington Post described this as "the psychedelic delicacy of moving multicolored lights." Coldplay also uses xylobands in the music video for the song " Charlie Brown ". In August 2015, a video was uploaded to the official YouTube account of the Xylobands, which showed that they could now change their colors. Coldplay used this new RGB type of xylobands on their tour for the album A Head Full of Dreams , including their performance at Glastonbury Festival 2016.

Other uses

Xylobands were also used by Cisco Systems at their Cisco Live event in London in 2013. The ribbons were given to attendees to wear during a keynote presentation. Also on the last day of the conference, the wristbands were handed out at a party. You can see them on YouTube videos of the conference.

In 2013 and 2015, the Chicago Blackhawks used xylobands to celebrate their Stanley Cup wins.

In October 2014, each fan of the New York Knicks game against the Chicago Bulls was given a ribbon that lit up during a frame performance by the Blue Man Group .
