Yamaguchi Susumu ( Japanese 山口 進 ; born January 25, 1897 in Minowa, Kamiina County (上 伊 那 郡 箕 輪 町) in Nagano Prefecture ; died November 25, 1983 ) was a Japanese painter and woodcut artist of the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Yamaguchi Susumu studied painting at the “Aoibashi Yōga Kenkyūjo” (葵 橋 洋 画 研究所) training center, then at the “Nihon Bijutsu Gakkō” (日本 美術 学校) and was accepted with a picture at the “Teiten” exhibition. He also dealt with woodcuts and participated in 1931 in the establishment of the "Japanese Society for Woodcut" (日本 版画 協会, Nihon Hanga Kyōkai) and the "Japanese Society for Creative Woodcut" (日本 創作 版画 協会, Nihon Sōsakuhanga Kyōkai) and was Member of the Shun'yōkai (春陽 会) artist community. In 1934 he sent 49 prints on a tour of Europe organized by the Society for Woodcut. All prints were sold: that was the impetus to turn to the woodcut. - In 1936 he took part in the art competition on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Berlin with the contributions "Hammer Throw" and "Women's Ball Throw". However, his contributions were not awarded.

After the Pacific War , he returned to his home in Nagano Prefecture and chose nature as his subject. He ran agriculture there and taught children to draw.

The collection “Kiso-Komagadake on Horseback” (木 曾 駒 ケ 岳馬 の 背; Kiso-komagadake - Uma no se) is an example of his work. Other prints are “Taishō-ike” (大 正 池) and “Mount Hodaka at daybreak” (穂 高山 の 夜 明 け, Hodakayama no Yoake). Yamaguchi also created posters and numerous bookplates .
