Yamaha SU700

The SU700 (actually Yamaha SU700 Sampling Unit) is a pad-oriented sampler with an integrated sequencer and effects unit from Yamaha .

description

The sampler is primarily designed for live use. It is portable and can be used directly without the aid of other devices. All functions can be controlled via a control panel. The SU700 is the largest model in the Yamaha sample unit range, which consists of the SU10 , SU200 and SU700 . The device appeared on the market in January 1999 and is no longer manufactured.

Yamaha had chosen DJs and remixers as the target group for the SU700, who were to be accommodated by the sampler's pattern and loop- based operation. The SU700 is essentially based on Akai's MPC series , but, unlike this series , has never been able to establish itself as a studio and production standard and is still quite unknown today. The sometimes complicated sequencer programming makes it difficult to work out songs in the studio. This contrasts with intuitive work with samples and effects that runs in real time, which makes the SU700 ideal for live use. It is still used today by electronic musicians for live performances .

Function and operation

In terms of function, the SU700 can be compared more to a drum computer or a groove box than to a conventional sampler. The SU700 has two loop pads, four pattern pads and four free pads, which can be switched over four banks. These pads trigger their assigned samples in different ways :

  • The loop pads play the sample as a loop and adapt it to the set tempo using the internal time stretching algorithm.
  • The samples assigned to the pattern pads can be set within a preset loop length. This function is comparable to creating rhythm patterns on drum computers .
  • The free pads are intended for one-off events.

For each pad there is an endless knob available, with which up to three different effects , filter and sample settings can be controlled in real time. There is also a ribbon controller with which all functions described can be operated. All events can be recorded with the internal sequencer and arranged into a song. The SU700 has an analogue input that can be used to mix incoming signals directly and apply effects.

Optional accessories

The functional scope of the basic model can be expanded with two expansion cards:

  • The SCSI card ASIB1 adds a SCSI connection to the SU700 , via which it can be connected to external devices such as ZIP drives, hard drives or CD drives.
  • The AIEB1 card expands the SU700 by six analog outputs and four digital inputs and outputs (ie two S / PDIF and coaxial connections each).
