The Yamasa Shōyu KK ( Japanese ヤ マ サ 醤 油 株式会社 , Yamasa Shōyu kabushiki kaisha , English Yamasa Corporation ) is a Japanese seasoning and pharmaceutical manufacturer . The company was founded in Chiba in 1645 under the name Yamasa and converted into a Kabushiki-gaisha in 1928 . It is primarily known for the production of soy sauce ( shōyu ). It is under the direction of Michio Hamaguchi , a direct descendant of the founder Gihei Hamaguchi .

In addition to its production facilities in Japan, the company has a branch in Salem , Oregon, and serves the North American market from there. In 2007, sales totaled 48.8 billion yen (approx. € 290 million).
