Yamazaki Sōkan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yamazaki Sōkan ( Japanese 山崎 宗 鑑 ; * around 1465 in the province of Provinzmi (today: Shiga Prefecture ); † around 1552 ) was a Japanese Haikai poet.

Yamazaki Sōkan is his poet's pseudonym, the surname Yamazaki being borrowed from a place of the same name in the province of Yamashiro (now Kyoto Prefecture ) in which he lived. His real name was Shina Norishige ( 志 那 範 重 ), called Yasaburō ( 弥 三郎 ).

Little is known about Yamazaki's living conditions. He was in the service of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshihisa and became a monk after his death in 1489. Contrary to the lore about his eccentric lifestyle, he probably earned his living as a teacher and calligrapher .

A collection of haikai that arose over the course of several years was not published until 1615, a hundred years after its completion, under the title Shinsen inu tsukuba shū .
