Yangon Calling - Punk in Myanmar is a documentary film by the Berlin filmmakers Alexander Dluzak and Carsten Piefke, shot in 2011 in Rangun , Myanmar .

Yangon Calling shows the life of the punks in the underground of Yangon. The film was made in 2011 at the time of the military dictatorship. The filmmakers came on tourist visas and shot undercover with a hidden camera. They accompanied the musicians of the bands Side Effect, Rebel Riot, No U Turn and System Holocaust in rehearsal rooms, on illegal concerts and in tattoo studios . Yangon Calling is a film about life in an authoritarian state, personal tragedies and the struggle for freedom in a country where punk is still real rebellion.

Performances

Yangon Calling has been shown at several film festivals around the world, including London , Shanghai , Helsinki , Singapore and Paris . The film was also shown in a television version on 3sat , ZDFkultur and ARTE in the magazine Tracks .

DVD / book

In 2013, Yangon Calling - Music, Subculture and Politics in Myanmar was released as a combination of book and double DVD on the Berlin label Fly Fast . The book contains texts on popular culture and politics in Myanmar. The authors are Alexander Dluzak and Matt Grace, who is also responsible for the pictures in the book. In addition to the documentary Yangon Calling, the DVD also contains a film about the tour of Germany by the Burmese punk band Side Effect. The book and DVD have been published in a bilingual version (German / English).
