Yaniv (Hebrew: יניב ) is a traditional card game from Israel . It is played with a 54 card deck with two jokers. The game is a mix between variants of Mau Mau and Rummy .

history

There are several legends about the origin, none of which have been proven. One tells of two Israeli travelers named Yaniv and Assaf. Another story is told about an Israeli soldier named Yaniv Benbenishti who is said to have invented the game while in an Israeli army prison. The game is known as "Yanif" in North America. In Europe, the game is also known as the Israeli traveling card game . There are several versions of the game with variants. Dalya and V69 are two that have become famous.

regulate

target

The aim of the game is to get as few points as possible. In order to get zero points, one must have 7 or less points in a round, which result from the sum of the cards. (Variants: 5 points, or as many points as the number of cards you start with, or less).

In each round no points are written to the respective point account for the round winner (s). The other players get as many points written down as the sum of their cards in hand at the end of the game (Yaniv). The face cards ( jack , queen, king) count ten points, the cards from 2-10 their respective value, the ace counts one point and the joker counts zero points. There may be special additional points when "Assaf" is said.

Deal the cards

Each player receives 5 cards. The remaining cards are stacked upside down on the table. The game is divided into rounds. The points are written down after each round. The goal here is to get the fewest points. It is bad etiquette to look at the cards before everyone has received their cards.

Indent

Each player must when it is his turn

  • Either say “Yaniv” (this ends the round, you can say “Assaf” if someone has fewer points in their hand than the person who called out “Yaniv”. The condition for calling out “Yaniv” is under 7 To have points on hand)
  • or : (Step 1 and 2; Throw 1 - Take 2)
    1. Discard one or more cards . When discarding several cards: the condition applies, either a row of at least 3 consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g. diamonds, hearts, spades or clubs: BDK or 9-10 bus etc.) or pairs / triplets or four of a kind of the same card value ( e.g. 2x B, 2x 10, 3x9 etc.) Discarding multiple cards is the possibility to reduce the number of cards in hand.
    2. After you have discarded a card or cards, you must either take a card from the deck or a card from the cards that a player has previously discarded. If he has discarded several cards, only one of the outer cards may be picked up. Exception: If a joker was played beforehand, for example to form a row, then the player on his turn, after the person who threw the joker, can exchange the joker with the card for which the joker stands - if he is is in the middle of the row. In any case, only one card may be taken, even if several have been discarded beforehand or you have discarded several yourself. A player must first discard a card and only then pick up another.

Yaniv - Assaf

The round continues clockwise until a player says "Yaniv".
A player can only say “Yaniv” (but doesn't have to!) If the sum of the points on the cards in his hand equals seven or less. When “Yaniv” is said, all players show their cards. The player with the lowest total is the round winner and receives 0 points added to his previous points on his points account.

If a player has the same number of points or less than the one who said “Yaniv”, that player can say “Assaf”. If more than one player can say "Assaf", the player with the lowest total is the winner of the round and receives 0 points or, if there is a tie, the player who last said "Yaniv"

If the player who said “Yaniv” is not the winner because his hand was undercut by another player, he will be penalized on the points on his hand. Either he receives 30 penalty points in addition to the points in hand or, if there were several "Assafs", then 20 penalty points for each player who undercut him.

counting

  • All round winners get 0 points.
  • The remaining players get the points they have in hand.
  • If “Assaf” is said by a player, then whoever said “Yaniv” receives an extra 30 points in addition to his points on the hand. If more than one player said “Assaf” then whoever said “Yaniv” gets 20 points extra for each player who said “Assaf”.
  • Variation: Some like to play with the additional rule that if a player reaches 50/100 or 150 points, the points on his points account are halved by the precision landing.

Win the game

Rounds are played until (2 variants):

  • A pre-determined limit of points has been reached. If a player has exceeded this limit, the game ends and the player with the fewest points wins.
  • A limit is set. If someone passes this, he leaves the game. A limit of 200 points is common.
