Yankuba Sonko (* before 1982) was a Gambian Inspector General of Police ( English Inspector General of Police , IGP) and since August 2019 Interior Minister.

Life

Sonko began a career with the Gambian police in 1982. In 1984 he reached the rank of Corporal and in 1988 Cadet Officer. From 2002 to 2007 he studied law in the UK. In 2008 he held the role of Police Crime Management Co-ordinator (CMC) and was then appointed Deputy Inspector General of the Gambian Police in December 2009. From March 2010 to 2014, he was one of the longest serving general inspectors. In November 2014, he was replaced by Benjamin Wilson .

Sonko was reinstated as Chief Inspector of the Police on July 13, 2015. Landing Kinteh will replace Sonko on June 22, 2017.

On August 22, 2019, Sonko was appointed Minister of the Interior to the Adama Barrow cabinet .
