Yarnemia is an extinct animal genus of the Ediacarium , which may have been related to the tunicates .

Etymology and first description

The generic name Yarnemia is derived from the northern Russian village of Jarnema ( Plesezki rajon , Arkhangelsk Oblast ) on the Onega , where the first fossil finds were made. The species name ascidiformis refers to the similarity with the sea ​​squirts (Ascidiae). The first scientific description was in 1984 by Nessov in Chistyakov, VG and colleagues.

The fossil Yarnemia ascidiformis , which in its outer shape is very similar to a potato , is taxonomically assigned to the tunicates for the time being. The so far oldest known tuniculate Shankouclava comes from the Cambrian , whereas Yarnemia belongs to the Ediacarian.
