Coordinates: 16 ° 55 ′ S , 145 ° 52 ′ E The Aboriginal Shire of Yarrabah is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 159 km² and has about 2600 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire consists of a long stretch of coast east of Cairns . The only settlement is Yarrabah in the north of the LGA.
history
In 1892 the Anglican priest John Gribble founded an Aboriginal mission at Cape Grafton. In 1904, the Aboriginal people of Fraser Island were forcibly relocated here. The church administered the settlement until 1960, when it went to the state. In 1987 the land was handed over to the Aborigines in trust and placed under local self-government.
administration
The Yarrabah Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
