life and work

After attending high school in Berlin , Yasin Demirel moved to New York City to study directing at the New York Film Academy . He continued his education at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles and returned to Berlin to work as a director and creative director for commercials .

In 2009 he made his first film with the short film drama Das Brot . Based on a post-war story by Wolfgang Borchert, the bread was shot in Berlin and shown at various international film festivals. The film was part of the competition of the Palm Springs International Shortfest, one of the most important short film festivals in the world. After successfully producing various commercials, Yasin Demirel devoted himself to developing his first feature film, Solitario .

In 2011 he moved to Italy to film the script he had written for Solitario . The film will be shot in 2015 in Rome, Italy and Siracusa, Sicily. Solitario portrays the life of Alessandro, who is unable to open his life to other people. However, one day he meets Sofia. This acquaintance turns into love within a short time. But Alessandro senses that his efforts to integrate Sofia into his life could fail because he was a loner all his life. In addition to a love drama, Solitario is also a homage to a forgotten era of Italian culture in the 1960s, which was shaped by films like 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita .

In 2014 Yasin Demirel continued work on the documentary Architecture At Gunpoint . In it, Yasin Demirel portrays the difficult situation in the Middle East by accompanying the Lebanese architect Bernard Khoury in Beirut. The ambivalence of what it means to create ultra-modern buildings in a place that can become a theater of war again at any time becomes clear through his building projects.

style

Many of his works are characterized by a distinctive visual style. Yasin Demirel attaches great importance to camera work and often picks up the camera himself. Since he also often writes the script for his films, he is described by film critics as a modern auteur filmmaker.
