The name is derived from a legend according to which the mythical first Tennō of Japan Jimmu , the great great-great-grandson of the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu , preceded the conquest in the east and sharpened arrows with the water of this waterfall. The name is made up of the two Kanjis矢 ( ya "arrow") and 研 ( togi "grind / polish").
