The Ben Bulben ( Irish : Binn Ghulbain ) is a 527 meter high table mountain in the Republic of Ireland . It is located about ten kilometers north of the city of Sligo , rises high above the county of Sligo and is considered its landmark. The mountain is characterized by its even shape and is one of the most famous mountains in Ireland along with the Knocknarea and the Croagh Patrick .

Emergence

Ben Bulben was formed during the Ice Age when large parts of the earth were under glaciers . Originally it was a large ridge , but it was carved out by the moving glaciers that cut into the earth. This formed this characteristic formation.

The sloping sides of Ben Bulben are largely made of Dartry limestone . At the summit there are smaller areas of Glencar limestone. The flatter sides are made of Ben Bulben slate. The rock forms in this area were formed around 320 million years ago.

In Drumcliff , at the foot of Ben Bulben, lies the grave of William Butler Yeats . The poet was buried there at his own request. In his honor, the area around Ben Bulben is unofficially referred to as Yeats Country (Irish Dúiche Yeats ).

Legends

Diarmuid and Gráinne are said to have lived in a cave on their escape, and a rock formation in the cave is known as Leaba Dhiarmada agus Gráinne ("The Bed of Diarmuid and Gráinne"). According to Irish mythology , the fatal fight between Diarmuid and the boar of Ben Gulban (= Ben Bulben) took place here.
