Yecapixtla ( Nahuatl , "artificial hill" or "hill under which there is a pyramid") is a city in the Mexican state of Morelos in central Mexico with about 16,000 inhabitants. The city is particularly known for the former monastery of San Juan Bautista. A festival is even held every year for the Mexican culinary specialty Cecina , dried beef. Yecapixtla is the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name Yecapixtla .
history
The settlement of the area around Yecapixtla began in pre-Columbian times by the Olmecs . During the Conquista , the population initially opposed the Spanish, but was defeated on March 16, 1521 by Gonzalo de Sandoval. The first Franciscans came with the Spanish to evangelize the population. Between 1535 and 1540 they built the monastery of San Juan Bautista, which is one of the mission stations at the foot of the Popocatépetl .
