Yekta Uzunoğlu (Kurdish: Yekta Geylani; born May 10, 1953 in Silvan , Turkey ) is a Turkish-German translator , doctor , author and entrepreneur .

Life

Uzunoğlu came to Czechoslovakia in 1972 at the age of 20 and studied at Charles University . He maintained contacts with dissident circles. His residence permit was not extended in 1979. With a grant from the Pasteur Institute , Uzunoğlu moved to France. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Uzunoğlu returned to Prague and worked, among other things, as an entrepreneur.

Uzunoğlu was also active as a Kurdish activist and also as a writer and translator. He is the author of translations of parts of the Bible and the works of Karel Čapek , Kurdish poetry and prose into Czech and Kurdish grammar into German. He has his permanent residence in the Czech Republic and has had German citizenship since 1996 .

Uzunoğlu is a member of the PEN -Club authors' association .

Judicial scandal

Criminal proceedings against Uzunoğlu were ongoing in the Czech Republic for over 13 years from 1994 on charges of kidnapping and torture. The process was criticized in public as inadequate. In March 2007 he was sentenced to two years suspended prison sentence. This was overturned by the next instance in July of the same year and Uzunoğlu acquitted.

Arrested in 2017 in Prague

Yekta Uzunoglu was arrested in Prague on April 28, 2017, but was released the next day. According to Uzunoglu himself, the Turkish embassy in Prague was behind the illegal actions of the Czech judiciary.

The Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic found on February 13, 2018, published under the file reference: III. ÚS 1920/17 with the rapporteur Jan Filip CSc., States that the arrest of Yekta Uzunoglu on April 28, 2017 was unconstitutional.
