The interior of the Yeni Cami

The Yeni Cami , German New Mosque , is located in the Istanbul district of Eminönü , near the Spice Bazaar , almost on the bank, at the southeast end of the Golden Horn at the southern end of the new Galata Bridge . It is also known under the name Valide Sultan Mosque, but the name Yeni Cami is common. The mosque replaced a fire ruin at that time, which is why it was called the "New" mosque. It was completed in 1663.

Building history

The contract for the construction of the Yeni Cami was placed in 1597 by Safiye Sultan. She laid the foundation stone for the construction of the mosque. Safiye Sultan was the wife of Sultan Murat III . The mosque was completed - with a lot of effort - in 1663, almost 70 years later, by Sultan Mehmed IV . Mother Hatice Turhan Sultan. From this date the Yeni Cami was available for prayers and ceremonies for the population. The architects included (in order) Mimar Davut Ağa, Mimar Dalgıç Ahmed Ağa and finally Mustafa Ağa. Mimar Davut Ağa was a student of the famous architect Mimar Sinan .

Surroundings and center of Istanbul

The mosque rises near the entrance of the Egyptian bazaar. The İznik faience inside the building and the domed structure are particularly excellent examples of Ottoman architecture . The complex has 66 domes. Furthermore there is a fountain and a balcony as well as a pavilion of the Sultan in the forecourt.
