Manuscript in the classic Yi script

The Yi script (Yi: ꆈꌠꁱꂷ nuosu bburma [nɔ̄sū bū̠mā] or Chinese: 彝文 Yíwén) is used to write the southwest Chinese minority language Yi .

The script is also known in Chinese under the name Cuànwén (爨 文) or Wéishū ( abbreviation : 韪 书; traditional character: 違 書) and other names such as tadpole script (蝌蚪文 kēdǒuwén).

history

The classic Yi script was a logogram script similar to the Chinese script. It consisted of between 8,000 and 10,000 characters. It has been in use for 500 years, but was probably in use earlier.

In 1974, the Chinese government introduced a new Yi script, which became the official script of the Yi language in 1980. It is a syllabary that consists of a total of 1,165 syllables.
