Yiyu ("Yi language", 彝语 (Yíyǔ), proper name Nosu, ꆇꉙ), formerly also Lolo , is a group of related languages spoken by the Yi in China and Vietnam .
The languages of the Yi are divided into six groups by Chinese linguists: northern dialect, western dialect, central dialect, southern dialect, southeast dialect and eastern dialect. These groups are mutually incomprehensible.
In the past, logograms were used to write the Yi language, the number of which is estimated at up to 10,000. In 1974 the Chinese government standardized the font and reduced it to 819 characters (756 standard characters and 63 characters that only appear in foreign words).
