Ymmo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ymmo († October 30, 984 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen from 976 to 984.

Life

Ymmo followed Ekkehart I into the office of Dean in 973. About mid-January 976 he was elected abbot and invested by Emperor Otto II . He is mentioned three times as abbot in documents: in 976, on October 29, 980 and 981. He took sides with Emperor Otto II when he was in conflict with the Bavarian Duke Heinrich the Quarrel .

Act

Like his predecessor Notker, Ymmo was considered a mild monastery head. Nevertheless, he is equally described as a strict follower of the Regula Benedicti . He managed to initiate an economic upswing for the monastery and to win back some goods or to buy new ones. The church treasure increased under him, so that he painted new frescoes in the Gallus and Ottmars Church and the chapel dedicated to St. Grave with a St. Ulrich built the crypt dedicated to him.
