Notker of St. Gallen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Notker von St. Gallen († December 15, 975 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen from 971 to 975.

Life

Notker was proposed for the office of abbot by his predecessor Purchart . He was elected on May 18, 971. He was the nephew of Abbots Thieto and Craloh and Notker II. Pfefferkorn .

Act

Under Notker, the monastery recovered economically. Evidence of this is provided by the completion of the city walls begun by his predecessor in Anno . Notker resorted to Hartmut's statutes and those of the visitation abbot from the time of his predecessor Purchart, Kerbodo von Lorsch, to improve the discipline and economy of the monastery. There were limits to his severity, however; so he was called "abba benignus" (German: "mild abbot"). The first evidence of the emergence of the St. Gallic ministry goes back to his government .
