Purchart from Udalrichingen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Purchart von Udalrichingen (* around 920/930; † August 9, 975 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen from 958 to 971.

Life

Purchart came from the Udalrichinger family . His father was probably Count Ulrich V .; his mother was called Wendelgard. He was probably born in the third decade of the 10th century. At a young age he came to the monastery of St. Gallen as an oblate and became dean under Craloh . It was first mentioned in a document as an abbot in 959/60.

His predecessor Ekkehart I , who had been appointed as his successor by Craloh, suffered permanent damage from a riding accident shortly after his appointment as abbot, which prevented him from exercising his office. Ekkehart I. therefore appointed Purchart as his successor, and he took office. But he, too, was injured in a riding accident and was not always able to fully fill his office.

He received from Pope John XIII. 967 confirmation of immunity and all other rights and possessions of the monastery.

Act

Purchart was very popular with the monks for his charity. However, economy and order suffered under him, as he could not carry out the business due to his leg paralysis, but had to leave them to the very old dean and the chamberlain. The emperor therefore arranged for a visit, economic measures were decided and Abbot Kerbodo von Lorsch was entrusted with reforms, which he laid down in statutes during a long stay in St. Gallen. These remained decisive. Purchart, however, had the Gallus Chapel built. After his resignation in 971, he wanted to spend his old age as an inclusus near them . But Bishop Konrad von Konstanz opposed this plan due to Purcharts' poor health.

Next to the entrance, Purchart was buried in 975 by Bishop Konrad von Konstanz.
