Udalrichinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Udalrichinger were a Franconian - Alemannic noble family based in Bregenz and Winterthur , which existed from the 8th to the 11th century. It was named after Count Udalrich I , son of Gerold von Anglachgau and brother of Hildegard , the wife of Charlemagne . These belonged to the imperial nobility, had been wealthy in the Lake Constance area since the second half of the 8th century and gained great influence there. They owned counties in Alp -, Breis -, Thur -, Linz -, Argen - and Hegau . Their opponents were the Hunfridinger , who ruled in Raetia . The attempt of the Udalrichinger to conquer this area failed despite royal approval. Around 839 they lost large parts of their counties on Lake Constance to the Guelphs , but regained them in 854 and even extended their rule to Pannonia , the Klett -, the Nibel - and the Rheingau due to the good relationship with the Carolingians . Around 1040 the family divided into the three lines Buchhorn , Bregenz and Pfullendorf .
