Notker II.

Notker II. (* Around 905; † November 12, 975 in St. Gallen ) was a Benedictine monk . To distinguish it, he also bears the surnames Medicus , Physicus or the doctor and Piperisgranum or Pfefferkorn .

According to tradition, he was a famous doctor and painter of the Benedictine monastery in St. Gallen. He decorated the monastery church there and several manuscripts with paintings, wrote various Latin verses and was particularly respected at the court of Emperor Otto I because of his knowledge of pharmacology .

He was known for the particularly strict interpretation of Benedict's rules of the order, which earned him the nickname "Pfefferkorn".

He was beatified by Pope Julius II in 1512 and his feast is September 17th or December 17th. His nephew Notker was abbot of the St. Gallen monastery from 971 to 975.
