You Can not Judge a Book by the Cover (also under the titles You Can not Judge a Book by Its Cover or You Can not Judge a Book by Looking at the Cover known) is one of Willie Dixon written Bluesong . The first and at the same time most famous version comes from Bo Diddley , who recorded the song in 1962 for Checker Records (Checker 1019), a sub-label of Chess Records . The song was one of Bo Diddley's last chart successes. It reached number 21 on the Billboard rhythm and blues charts and number 48 on the pop charts. On the B-side is the song I Can Tell .
The title of the song goes back to the very common English phrase "don't judge a book by its cover", which means that you shouldn't judge too quickly because of the appearance. This idiom is associated with various things that shouldn't be done: "You can't judge an apple by looking at a tree" (German: You can't judge an apple by looking at the tree.), " You can't judge honey by looking at the bee "(German: You cannot judge honey by looking at the bee.)," You can't judge a daughter by looking at the mother "(German: Du kann do not judge the daughter by looking at her mother.) etc. In the chorus, Diddley sings that he was wrongly judged because he looks like a farmer, but is a lover: "I look like a farmer, but I'm a lover, you can't judge a book by looking at the cover “(German: I look like a farmer, but I am a lover, you cannot judge a book by looking at the book cover.).
