Shalom Sechvi (birth name Friedrich Kokotek ; born May 25, 1928 in Sosnowiec , Poland , † March 13, 2013 in Rishon LeZion ) was an Israeli painter and Holocaust survivor.

Life

Shalom Sechvi was born in Sosnowiec, Poland, to the artist Abraham Kokotek and his wife Haya Kokotek. He spent his childhood in the Holocaust camps . He survived camps in Grünberg (Silesia) and Kittlitzstreben , a subcamp of Groß-Rosen . He then traveled illegally to Palestine on the immigrant ship Latrun and began a new life in Kibbutz Afikim . In Palestine it took its present name. He joined the Hagana , was involved in the fighting in the Jordan Valley and later accompanied the supply convoys to Jerusalem and the besieged Kfar Etzion . When the last convoy to Etzion was attacked at Nebi-Daniel, it was wounded and came to Jerusalem.

Shalom Sechvi lived and worked in Nes Ziona . In his pictures he dealt a lot with the Holocaust. Many of the works were autobiographical. Another focus was the artistic examination of the Hebrew script . His later work is influenced by the encounter with his painter colleague Gerhard Jürgen Blum-Kwiatkowski , who also comes from Poland.

His autobiography My Heart Beats Again was premiered in November 2011 at the Solingen Theater, Nes Ziona's twin town. The artist collective ARTCORE under the patronage of Günter Lamprecht designed the live radio play with projections of Sechvis autobiographical images.

Sechvi was married to Yaffa Friedman. He had four children in total. His eldest son Avi is a well-known set designer in Israel.
