Ness Ziona ( Hebrew נס ציונה, Arabic نيس تسيونا, DMG Nīs Tsiyūnā ) is a city in the central district of Israel . The name means "sign to Zion" and is named after Jer 4,6  ELB : "Raise a standard in the direction of Zion."

location

The city lies on the edge of the Judean hill country of Schefela . Neighboring towns are Rechovot in the south, Netzer Sereni in the east, Rishon LeZion in the north and Beit Chanan in the west.

history

The place goes back to an estate with a citrus plantation, which the Templar Reisler established in Wadi Chanin in 1878 . After his wife and children died of malaria, he emigrated back to Europe via Odessa in 1882 . There he agreed to a land swap with Re'uven teacher. Reisler received his land in Russia and teachers received the plantation in the Holy Land . Teacher founded Tel Aviv there in 1883 with his son Moscheh and other colonists recruited in Jaffa (including the family of Sami Hochberg , who later became a well-known Zionist functionary and newspaper publisher ("Jeune Turc") in Constantinople) , but put it colloquially the name Nachalath Re'uven (Gut Re'uven) comes through. In 1891 Michael Halperin bought more land in the neighborhood and founded Nes Ziona, with which Lehrer's settlement merged.

population

In September 2003 the population was 26,400 and the annual population growth was 2.9%. The 16 km² locality received city status in 1992 . In 2018 Nes Ziona had 50,214 inhabitants.

racism

In October 2015, the Ness Ziona community banned employees from schools who are Palestinians with Israeli citizenship from entering the community's schools.

economy

The site is the seat of the Israeli Institute for Biological Research (IIBR), which works for the Ministry of Defense and employs around 350 people. In the south, on the border with the neighboring town of Rechovot , the Kiryat Weizmann Scientific Park is located, which houses start-ups and offices of international corporations, particularly from the high-tech and scientific environment.

Culture

The Polish painter Shalom Sechvi lived and worked in Nes Ziona until his death. His eldest son, Avi Sechvi, who has won several awards in Israel, now lives in his house.
