Joseph Jacobus Maria (Youp) van 't Hek (born February 28, 1954 in Naarden , sometimes called Youp for short ) is a Dutch cabaret artist , columnist for the NRC Handelsblad , musician and author .

biography

Van 't Hek's love for cabaret began in 1963 when he and his parents attended a performance of Toon Hermans at the Carré Theater in Amsterdam . In 1973 he changed his nickname from Joep to Youp after a friend had added a p to a T-shirt with the text We help you . In the same year he founded the cabaret group Cabaret NAR , whose last program Man vermist ( Man Misses ) made a breakthrough in 1983. Van 't Hek's programs consist of many different short stories linked by a common thread. Van 't Hek has already been selected eight times by Dutch television for the Oudejaarsconference , an annual review designed by a cabaret artist and broadcast on New Year's Eve.

Besides being a cabaret artist, van 't Hek is also active as a columnist , including for the NRC Handelsblad . He is known for his open criticism of companies and products, including T-Mobile and Buckler.

Van 't Hek was also known as a musician. The Christmas carol Flappie , which was first published in 1978 and has an unusual black humor for this genre, was voted the most popular Christmas carol in 2013 by listeners of the Dutch radio station Q-Music . In 2010 van 't Hek wrote the song Majesteit with Guus Meeuwis , which was addressed to the Queen and explained to her what to do if the Netherlands were to become world champions. This song reached number 2 in the Dutch Top 100 singles .

Van 't Hek is also a writer. In addition to books that consist of collected song texts, programs or columns, he has also written several children's books.
