Ysperklamm

The Ysperklamm is a gorge in the Lower Austrian municipality of Yspertal in the Melk district in the Waldviertel . The gorge was declared a natural monument with the ID ME-028 on December 4, 1952 .

location

The Ysperklamm is located on the upper reaches of the Great Ysper . Over a distance of a few kilometers , the Ysper flows from the undulating plateau of the Waldviertel down into the Yspertal and thus manages a height difference of 300 meters.

history

A wood drift was operated until 1929, transporting floating tree trunks to the Danube and on to Vienna. For the "Große Ysperschwemme" (24 kilometers to the Danube) the artificial Ödteich (also "Ödenteich") created in 1599 was dammed and the water dammed in this way was used as a drive for the 0.70 to 0.75 meter long logs by pulling the spigot. On the night of April 19-20, 1956, the dam broke and the 3.5 hectare pond fell dry, and the access and bridge systems were badly damaged. The dam was not rebuilt and is now overgrown.

Development

The Ysperklamm can be accessed by a hiking trail leading over numerous bridges, stairs and ladders. A drivable path runs parallel to the footpath along the gorge, which inexperienced hikers can take.
