Zanker was a German manufacturer of household appliances and is now a brand of the Swedish Electrolux group.

Company history

In 1888 Imanuel Zanker founded a metal goods factory in Tübingen . In 1903 Zanker took over the grinding mill for copper products on the Ammer Canal in Tübingen's Weststadt. During this time, the company mainly produced pub signs, bed bottles and coachman's lanterns. Until 1912 the company existed under the name "Hermann Zanker, Maschinen- und Metallwarenfabrik". From 1912 the company traded as “Im. Zanker, metal goods factory ”; In 1939 the name was added to Kupferhammerintroduced. In the 1930s, production of the first motor-driven washing machines began, for which the company ultimately became known. From 1930 the company name Zanker stood for quality products in the washing machine sector. The company experienced an upswing in the years of reconstruction and the economic miracle after the Second World War. That is why Zanker quickly became the largest employer in the city of Tübingen. From 1945 Zanker expanded its product range and manufactured refrigerators, dishwashers as well as ironing machines and heaters. In 1949, Zanker started building tractor tractors and produced the Zanker M1. In 1967 Hermann Zanker KG took over the Hessian manufacturer Forbach. Up until this point, Forbach GmbH & Co. KG had specialized in the manufacture of hot water devices.

At the beginning of the 1970s, AEG took over a 75 percent share in Zanker GmbH . In 1979 there was a risk of mass layoffs due to the AEG crisis. In 1981 the closure of the Tübingen company was discussed, but initially prevented by a settlement. At the beginning of the 1980s the company still had around 1,200 employees. In 1981 bankruptcy was filed; In 1982 the subsequent bankruptcy proceedings for Zanker GmbH ended and the production of washing machines was relocated from Tübingen to Nuremberg by AEG . Zanker later became the property of Electrolux and was closed as an independent company on March 31, 1993.

Products

From 1912 the company mainly produced metal goods. In 1933 Zanker began building washing machines, in 1939 with metal containers and centrifuges, in 1947 with spin dryers and in 1977 with the production of tumble dryers.

In 1949 and 1950, Zanker also produced the M 1 farm tractor. Only 100 of this vehicle with a 10 kW (14 hp) single-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine with 1020 cm³ and direct jet injection were sold. A light and signal system, a drawbar, front and rear trailer coupling and a transmission PTO were standard. In addition, you could equip the tractor with a mower drive, a mower and a pulley. As early as 1950, the construction drawings became the property of Bautz . Household appliances are currently sold under the Zanker brand under the leadership of Electrolux .
