Kovsakan ( Armenian Կովսական , Kovsakan ; Cyrillic-written Azerbaijani and Russian Зенгилан , Zəngilan ) is a city in Azerbaijan .
geography
It is the capital of the Zəngilan District , but is occupied and administered by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic , which is not recognized internationally . According to their statistics, the city had 376 inhabitants in 2005.
history
The town received a railway station in 1936 when the railway line Ələt-Kapan was opened. The city was a small settlement until 1957 when it was expanded into a town. In 1967 there was a further expansion and people from other parts of the country settled in the city. At the outbreak of the Nagorno-Karabakh -Konfliktes 1989, the railway was initially set, later the railway infrastructure destroyed. In 1993 the city and district were occupied by the Armenian army and have been administered since then by the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh .
Culture and economy
In the city there is a historical museum, a small mosque and a war memorial. The city's cigarette factories made up much of the industry.
