Zaleukos of Lokroi was in the 7th century BC. A well-known legislator in the Lower Italian Lokroi .

According to Diodorus , Zaleukos was of noble descent. According to a report by the historian Ephoros von Kyme , he was the first Greek to put laws in writing. He did this in accordance with the Lycurgian tradition. Zaleukos intended to counteract perversion of the law, corruption and social contradictions by setting the sentence and excluding ransom. Due to his reputation in legal matters, Zaleukos was awarded the respected status of Aisymneten , who was called out of court as mediating arbitrator.

Aftermath

A legendary ancient tradition that emerged late made Zaleukos a disciple of Pythagoras , disregarding chronology . Posterity attributed to him a text entitled Prooímia nómōn ( Preamble to the Laws) , which was actually written in a Pythagorean milieu. It is a compilation of general religious, ethical, and political advice or regulations. It was not until Richard Bentley realized in 1699 that Zaleukos could not be the author.

The Renaissance was Zaleukos as a just and exemplary ruler. For example, he was immortalized in the facade painting of the town hall of Liestal (1590).
