Zama Major

Zama Major or Zama Regia ( Greek  Ζάμα μείζων Zama meizon ) was an ancient city in the province of Africa proconsularis . Today's Jama is about 10 km south of the city of Siliana .

The Carthaginian general Hannibal fought in 202 BC. In the Second Punic War here in the battle of Zama against the Romans, in which he was defeated by the Roman general Scipio Africanus the Elder .

Then Zama belonged to the Numid Empire and was the residence of King Iuba I , hence the name Zama Regia ("the royal Zama").

In the Roman Empire it belonged to the province of Africa proconsularis and was under Hadrian Colonia at the latest .

The Roman Catholic titular diocese of Zama Major goes back to an extinct bishopric in this city .
