Zampano

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zampano or the great Zampano (Italian. Zampanò , from zampa = paw, paw, coll. For hand) is one of the three main characters from the film La Strada - The Song of the Road (1954) by the Italian director Federico Fellini .

Due to this film character, the term Zampano was originally only negative. Anthony Quinn plays a boastful here who puts himself in the limelight and wants to make an impression with a lot of fanfare. He tries to convince his amazed fellow human beings that he can even make the impossible possible.

Another depiction of the figure of Zampano as a doer in the background who influences the fate of other people can be found in Freddy Breck's hit The Great Zampano from 1975.

Nowadays the connotation of the term Zampano has changed somewhat in the parlance of many people, even if not for the phrase “play the great Zampano”. It is now often used as a synonym for someone who has or seems to have all the strings in hand. For example, the Englishman Bernie Ecclestone was often referred to by the German-speaking mass media as "the (big) Zampano of Formula 1 " .
