Zaraat in the Bible

Zaraat describes a kind of discoloration that is not caused by a natural disease , but as a warning and punishment by God in the case of defamation (Heb. לשון הרע Lashon Hara ' ), gossip (Heb. רכילות Rechilut ), slander, vanity and other sins is understood. Depending on the severity of the offense, it can appear on the skin and hair, clothing and houses in different colors (white, red, green) and shapes ( blisters , spots, bumps ).

Leprosy in the Bible

In 3rd Book of Moses chapter 13, verses 1-46 EU , ritual purity laws are described in detail. This also includes the differential diagnosis of skin diseases (e.g. leprosy , lupus ) and the treatment of the sick by doctors in contrast to the ritual disease (hebr ץ צרעת Zara'at ). The ritual impurity Zaraat can only be diagnosed by priests . Due to the related religious impurity (Hebrew טמאה Tum'ah ), those affected are quarantined and are not allowed to maintain social contacts until they repent (Hebrew תשובה Teshuwa ) and are healed by God . The fate of Miriam , the sister of Moses , who became a leper because of defamation about him ( Numbers 12:10 EU ) and had to leave the Israelite camp until she recovered, can serve to clarify this .
