Zarafa was a groupware - server software for Linux , like Microsoft Exchange Server . As of May 1, 2017, Zarafa is no longer supported. The official fork Kopano continues Zarafa with modified functionality and is sold on a subscription basis.
Zarafa is released in a functionally restricted version (no Outlook clients, some enterprise features are missing) as free software under the conditions of version 3 of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL). In addition, a not completely open source Free Edition is available that enables connections via its own Outlook client ("closed source") for up to three users. Zarafa is a member of the Open Source Business Alliance , supports the OpenMAPI initiative and is offered as SaaS within the scope of Deutsche Wolke . In January 2015, Zarafa announced that support for Outlook as a native MAPI32 driver will no longer be offered from April 2016 and that Microsoft Outlook 2013 (and higher) can be connected via ActiveSync in its place (although not all functions previously available are available stand). As of May 1, 2017, Zarafa is no longer supported.

Zarafa is dependent on MySQL , but not limited to a mail transfer agent or web server .
function
The software, which was written for Linux servers, has a MAPI connection, simulates the functions of Microsoft Exchange servers and thus enables users of Microsoft Outlook or other suitable clients to manage shared calendars, contacts, notes and e-mails. This connection was supported until April 2016. Existing mail services such as B. used postfix .
Zarafa also extends PHP with a module for calling MAPI commands directly from PHP scripts. It also offers its own web client for the Apache web server , which is similar in operation to Outlook.
With the help of the free in-house development z-push , Zarafa supports mobile devices such as smartphones and PDAs. It consists of an implementation of ActiveSync over-the-air (OTA), which enables communication with Windows Mobile, Nokia and Ericsson mobile phones, Apple (e.g. iPhone / iPad / iPod) and Android-based mobile devices. These end devices can also receive push mail via the ActiveSync protocol.
For the integration of Google Maps or Alfresco there are e.g. B. own Zarafa plugins. With Z-Merge it is possible to connect additional software to Zarafa (e.g. SugarCRM ).
Editions
Different editions are available. The source code base is identical for all editions.
- Open source
- This is the smallest edition available with unlimited users for web access and IMAP, but without MAPI-based Outlook integration. It lacks multi-user calendars, the "bricklevel backup" and Active Directory support.
- Community
- The Community Edition expands the Open Source Edition with the Zarafa Client Connector for Microsoft Windows and supports up to three MAPI-based users via Outlook (the latter until April 2016).
- Small business
- With the Small Business Edition, the restrictions of the community version do not apply : Outlook connection (until April 2016), multi-user calendar, brick-level backup and Active Directory support are available without restrictions.
- professional
- Is a Small Business Edition expanded to include Blackberry Enterprise Server, automatic software distribution (“auto deployment tools”) and high availability functions.
- Enterprise
- With multi-server support, users can be distributed to different servers in one installation. Furthermore, the Enterprise Edition allows the supported use of the multi-client capability of Zarafa.
background
Zarafa is originally a Dutch product. The Plochinger Neuberger & Hughes GmbH with many years of experience in Linux groupware market has been cooperating for the fall of 2006 with the Dutch and occupied at the German subsidiary , the Zarafa Germany GmbH, also the position of one of two managing directors. In October 2007, commercial support for its own groupware server Exchange4linux was discontinued in favor of Zarafa. From April 2016, Zarafa no longer plans to integrate Outlook via the MAPI connector.
