Zaytuna College

The Zaytuna College ( Arabic كلية الزيتونة/ Kullīyat az-Zaituna), formerly known as the Zaytuna Institute , is a non-profit educational institution in Berkeley in the US state of California . America's first Muslim Liberal Arts College was founded in 2009 by Hamza Yusuf , Imam Zaid Shakir, and Hatem Bazian . The aim of this institution is to revive and strengthen Islamic thinking in the context of contemporary society. It is the first Muslim educational institution of its kind in the United States .

It was originally founded as the Zaytuna Institute in the state of California in 1996. In 1998 the location for the academy in Hayward was bought. Several conferences were held at the Zaytuna Institute, attended by many high-ranking Muslim scholars from around the world. Zaytuna College is seeking to become the first Islamic university in the United States to certify the degrees recognized by the other major educational institutions in the Muslim world, such as al-Azhar University in Egypt.

2014 was the first year in which the Zaytuna College BA degrees ( Bachelor were awarded -grade).

The 4th seminar of the Catholic-Muslim Forum took place from November 6th to 8th, 2017 at Zaytuna College. The theme was Integral Human Development: Growing in Dignity. Catholic and Muslim perspectives . Many of the participants in the Muslim delegation (led by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf) came from Zaytuna College.
