Zdenek Sekanina

Zdenek Sekanina (born June 12, 1936 in Mladá Boleslav as Zdeněk Sekanina ) is an American astronomer born in the Czech Republic .

From 1959 he studied astronomy at the Charles University in Prague , where he also received his doctorate in 1963. Since 1980 he has worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory .

His main field of study is the study of meteors and interplanetary matter and, since completing his university career, the study of comets . As part of his investigations, he dealt with Halley's Comet , the Tunguska event and the breaking up of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 when it hit Jupiter .

He was involved in the data analysis of the Giotto , Stardust and SOHO missions.

The asteroid (1913) Sekanina was named after him.
