The Schmachtenberg colliery in Essen-Kettwig is a former hard coal mine . The mine was located in the area of ​​today's Berchemer Weg.

Mining history

In 1748 the concession was granted by the Abbot of Werden . Presumably the mine went into operation afterwards. In 1790 there was another concession to Schmachtenberg, Hinnighoff et Consorten. The mine was in operation in 1802, 30 ringlets of hard coal were extracted every day . From 1804 the mine was out of operation for several years. In 1833 a new recommendation was made for deeper mining . The mine was then put back into operation. A length field was awarded on July 24, 1838 . On March 24, 1855 , the Schmachtenberg colliery consolidated with further mines to form the Kanzel colliery .

Promotion and workforce

In 1834 the mine employed five miners who produced 11,813 bushels of hard coal. In 1836, 3605 Prussian tons of hard coal were mined. In 1838 eight miners were employed at the mine. In 1840 a production of 3,046 ½ tons of Prussian hard coal was provided. The last known production figures of the mine come from the year 1842, 4058 Prussian tons of hard coal were produced.
