The United Norm colliery was a hard coal mine in Dortmund - Wickede .

history

The first mining companies in the vicinity of Wickede and Massen already existed towards the end of the 1820s. In 1829, at the request of Gisbert Freiherr von Romberg, the deep Romberger Erbstollen was set up on the Massener Bach and driven in a south-westerly direction in order to drain the mining mines there in the Holzwickede-Sölde-Aplerbeck area. After 2365 m, the excavation of this tunnel had to be stopped around 1838 due to high water inflows and water withdrawal complaints by landowners.

In 1846, when the Clemens and Gute Hoffnung mining fields were merged, the United Norm colliery was established . It was the same year with the workover of Romberger Erbstollens for the mine water discharge started and a 130 m deep shaft at the former light hole 3 drilled . The work came to a halt several times due to increased water inflows. In 1856 a steam engine for drainage and extraction was put into operation at the Norm shaft and a shaft house was built. Because of the unworkable outcrops, the United Norm colliery, apart from a small coverage of its own needs, never got into regular coal mining and was therefore shut down in December 1865.

According to a contract from 1867, the southern part of the mine field was sold to the mining company Caroline ( Essen ). The rest of the United Norm colliery was given over to the Caroline colliery in Holzwickede at the end of the 1860s due to a lack of investment funds , which began to reopen the mine in 1872 and expanded the shaft renamed "Caroline 4" to a depth of 210 meters. Although it was possible to start producing a small amount of coal from this mine from 1874 onwards, it had to be stopped again on August 1, 1875 due to the lack of a rail connection and the unworthiness of the exposed seams. In 1896/97 the shaft was converted into a weather shaft for the Caroline colliery until it was finally shut down in 1909. The shaft was then filled in, and apartments were built in the shaft building. A deeper re-opening of the Norm mine field by the Caroline mine took place from 1917 onwards, without the old mine being reactivated. Up until its closure in 1951, the majority of Caroline's production came from the Norm field.

Relics

The former shaft of the United Norm colliery was used for residential purposes until the 1980s. As a result of the expansion of the Dortmund airport , the old building was demolished in 1986. Today there are no more traces of it, only the "Zeche-Norm-Straße" south and north of the airport runway and a manhole cover on the road are reminiscent of the old mine.
