Character table in general means the tabular visualization of a character set or a character set table , so that people get an overview of the characters contained in a font and their character forms .

Specifically, the character table is a many desktop - operating systems supplied program (and a synonym for similar) with all the characters of all activated fonts of the system used can be clearly displayed in a table. Furthermore, it enables these characters to be copied to the clipboard in order to paste them into other programs or even to be entered directly into them (usually by double-clicking on a character). The character table is mainly used to select and enter special characters .

On Windows
is the file name of the character map charmap.exe; This executable file is located in the Windows directory (mostly C:\Windows), in newer Windows versions in the subdirectory System32 (for example C:\Windows\System32).
On OS X
a character table can be called up via the menu item “Character palette” of the “Keyboard menu” in the menu bar, which can be activated via the system settings. Here the character table is displayed in a palette, which means that it overlays all other windows. The characters can be dragged into the desired application with the mouse or inserted directly by double-clicking, as with an on- screen keyboard.

On Linux
is gucharmap often in use on desktop systems. It is included with the Gnome desktop environment and many distributions as standard . This functionality is part of Gnome, but it does not need to be installed; it is sufficient to have the program installed. It can be found in the “Applications” menu in the “Accessories” submenu as a “Character table”.gucharmap

There are also character table programs in most other operating systems.
