Indication of the date

Thai dates are based on the Buddhist calendar , which begins with the death of Gautama Buddha and is 543 before the Gregorian calendar . As an example: the year 2017 is 2560 in Thai date.

Times of day

In many areas of Thailand a six-hour daily rhythm is used in everyday language, similar to the twelve-hour rhythm in German, in which Es ist ein can stand for 1 a.m. or 1 p.m. In detail:

  • mong chao ( Thai : โมง เช้า , [mōːŋ tɕʰáːw] ) for the time between 7:00 and 12:59
  • bai mong (Thai: บ่าย โมง , [bàːj mōːŋ] ) for the time between 13.00 and 18.59
  • thum (Thai: ทุ่ม , [tʰûm] ) for the time between 19.00 and 0.59
  • ti (Thai: ตี , [tīː] ) for the time between 1.00 and 6.59

This type of time indication was announced in 1901 by King Chulalongkorn (r. 1868 to 1910) in the Royal Gazette .

Thailand has also followed the international standard ISO 8601 as the national variant TIS 1111: 2535 since 1992 .
