Journal of Mathematics and Physics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The journal for mathematics and physics is a journal for mathematics and physics founded by Oskar Schlömilch in 1856 and published by the Teubner publishing house . It existed until 1917 (Volume 64).

Schlömilch and Teubner wanted a journal that was also accessible and of interest to teachers and applied mathematicians and that was not as academic in its contributions as the Annalen der Physik or the Journal für die pure and applied mathematics . Furthermore, the areas of physics or applied mathematics and pure mathematics should not be so strictly separated. In addition to Schlömilch (who was the main editor until 1896), the editor was initially Benjamin Witzschel, who was replaced by Moritz Cantor from 1859 (until 1900). E. Kahl (1860 to 1892) joined in 1860. From 1901 Rudolf Mehmke and Carl Runge were editors.

There should be a place in the journal for publications on mathematics and their applications. The areas of applied and numerical mathematics, including arithmetic aids, taught in the technical universities that were emerging in the German-speaking countries at the end of the 19th century were also taken into account. This came to the fore when, after Schlömilch's death (1901), the magazine came under the editorship of Mehmke and Runge, with Felix Klein as a key advisor to Teubner Verlag.

Moritz Cantor also provided supplements on the history of mathematics (treatises on the history of mathematics), which appeared irregularly from issue 1 in 1877 to issue 10 in 1900. Then they appeared separately as treatises on the history of mathematical sciences until 1912 (issue 30).

Volume 50 from 1905 contains a complete register.
