Time diving

As time diving , even static apnea diving (Engl. Static apnea), is the scuba diving , especially the freediving indicates performance discipline in which it comes to stay with the same breath as long as possible under water.

The time is measured in which the breathing openings (nose and mouth) are under water. It is not necessary to submerge for this. Most apnoists prefer to lie on the surface and just dip their face in the water. Signs agreed beforehand are exchanged with a security guard in order to be able to recognize a sudden faint due to lack of oxygen at an early stage. In competitions that meet the standards of the international freediving association AIDA International , the expected diving time is announced in advance. If this time is not reached, penalty points are imposed. The execution must then take place within a time window of ten seconds, starting with the so-called "Official Top". After the mouth or nose have left the water, the time will stop. The athlete must then complete a surface log within 15 seconds. This consists of:

  1. Removing any equipment from the face, e.g. B. diving mask , swimming goggles or nose clip
  2. Give an OK sign .
  3. Verbal confirmation: "I am OK" or "I'm OK". In national competitions, this confirmation can also be given in an official national language, i.e. in Germany also in German.

If the surface log is not completed, the performance will not be assessed.

The men's world record was 10:12 minutes until June 8, 2009 and was set by the German Tom Sietas ; since June 8, 2009 the new world record is 11:35 minutes, set by the French Stéphane Mifsud . The women's world record was set by the Russian Natalja Moltschanowa and is 9:02 minutes (June 29, 2013, Belgrade, Serbia).

A popular variant of the show is time diving with pure oxygen . Here, the diver hyperventilates with pure oxygen from an oxygen cylinder about ten minutes before take-off. As a result, the trigger for the breath stimulus , the carbon dioxide , is almost completely exhaled. In addition, normal air contains only about 21% oxygen and 0.04% carbon dioxide. That is, in the lungs contained breathing air contains almost five times the amount of oxygen. Nevertheless, with this variant only about twice as long times are achieved. The reason for this is the extreme increase in carbon dioxide. This biochemical process also changes the pH value of the blood. The blood buffer can also be trained, but above an individual limit it can no longer be tolerated. In television shows such as B. the Guinness record show diving times of around 20 minutes are shown.
