Time course diagrams are two-dimensional diagrams, with time being plotted on the x-axis and the states of objects on the y-axis. This type of diagram is similar to the display on an oscilloscope and has long been used in electrical engineering.

In (object-oriented) modeling , these diagrams are included in the Booch method , in Fusion and in the Unified Modeling Language .

Timing diagram in the UML

A time chart (Engl. Timing diagram ) is one of the 14 chart types in the Unified Modeling Language (UML), a modeling language for software and other systems. It was newly introduced in version 2.0 of the UML.

The timing diagram is a behavior diagram and shows a particular view of the dynamic aspects of the system being modeled. It allows more precise time specifications than the other UML diagrams and is therefore best suited for the design of real-time systems .

In the UML, timing diagrams are introduced as a form of representation of interactions .
