The Zellcheming Association is an association of pulp and paper chemists and engineers. It was founded in Darmstadt in 1905 on the initiative of Carl Gustav Schwalbe (1871–1938) in Darmstadt and, according to his own statement, is the oldest technical / scientific association in this branch.

Its members come from academia and the pulp, paper processing and manufacturing industries. Its aim is to advance science in the pulp and paper industry. The association is based in Darmstadt .

General meeting

Every year the association holds its general assembly in the last week of June. The accompanying industrial exhibition, the Zellcheming-Expo, is the largest annual fair for the pulp, paper and paper supply industry in Central Europe.

In 2008 the Zellcheming-Expo had 301 exhibitors and 3,621 visitors.

Technical committees

The association is divided into the following specialist committees:

  • Cellulose and Cellulose Derivatives (CELL)
  • Chemical additives (CHAD)
  • Pulp Production (CHEP)
  • Coated printing papers and cardboard (COAT)
  • Paper and cardboard processing (CONV)
  • Education and training (EDUC)
  • Plant and energy technology (ENEN)
  • Environmental issues (ENVI)
  • Wood pulp production (MECP)
  • Cardboard and cardboard production (PBTC)
  • Paper production (PMAK)
  • Recovered paper recycling (RECO)
  • Occupational safety (SAFE)
  • Pulp and paper testing (TEST)

The abbreviations given in brackets were derived from the English names of the individual technical committees.

Awards

On the 100th birthday of the chemist Alexander Mitscherlich (1836–1918), Zellcheming donated the Alexander Mitscherlich commemorative coin in 1936 to honor outstanding work in the field of cellulose research and cellulose chemistry. The first prize winner in 1936 was paper technologist Walter Brecht . Other winners are: Emil Heuser (1882–1953), cellulose chemist (1952); Rudolf Patt , long-time professor at the Institute for Wood Chemistry and Chemical Technology of Wood in Hamburg (1999).

In 1976, Zellcheming donated the Walter Brecht commemorative coin in honor of the long-time director of the Darmstadt Institute for Paper Manufacture to honor outstanding achievements in the field of paper research. Prize winners include: Helmut Stark from the University of Graz (1999); Erwin Krauthauff, longtime chairman of INGEDE (2002).
