history

The company's roots go back to a former pharmacy in what is now Prague , which was first mentioned in 1488 and was called the Black Eagle ("U černého orla"). In 1857 this pharmacy was acquired by Benjamin Fragner, whose grandson Jiří Fragner decided in 1928 to set up a pharmaceutical company in Prague, in Dolní Měcholupy, where the headquarters of Zentiva NV is still today.

After the nationalization in communist Czechoslovakia in 1946, the company was privatized again after the collapse of communism and from 1993 was called Léčiva (Medicinal Products). This privatization process was completed in 1998 and the company now operated as a public limited company. In 2003 the company was renamed Zentiva NV and in the same year integrated the Slovakian company Slovakofarma, further acquisitions followed in 2005, Sicomed, and in 2007 the pharmaceutical division of the Turkish company Eczacibaşi .

In 2009, the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi increased its 25 percent stake in Zentiva, which it had acquired in 2006, and took over the company completely. Zentiva became part of the Sanofi Group and strengthened the position of the parent company in Eastern Europe. In 2011, the parent company decided to bundle its entire generics activities under the Zentiva brand and thus create the third largest generics group in Europe.
