building

From 1940 to 2010 the museum was located in the stock exchange building on the eastern tip of Vasilyevsky Island, known as "Strelka" . In 2007 it was decided to accommodate the raw materials exchange in the historic building. Instead, the almost empty Krjukow barracks across from the island of New Holland on the Moika shore, which once housed sailors from the Navy, was rebuilt. The brick building, erected between 1844 and 1852, was particularly suitable for museum purposes, as the exhibition area with 31,000 m² is almost four times as large as on the Strelka. The museum has been open at the new location since 2011.
