The Mikhail Kutuzov ( Russian Михаил Кутузов ) was a light cruiser of Sverdlov-class cruiser in the Black Sea Fleet of the Soviet Navy .

The ship is named after the Russian Field Marshal Michail Kutuzov . It is the last remaining ship in its class and has been a museum ship on the east bank of the Black Sea in Novorossiysk since 2002 .

history

construction

The shipyard of Mikhail Kutuzov was shipyard 444 (Black Sea shipyard) in Mykolaiv in the south of today's Ukraine . The keel was laid on February 23, 1951 and the launch on November 29, 1952.

commitment

After its commissioning in January 1955, it became part of the Black Sea Fleet and was used in the Mediterranean , among other places . The ship visited Romania in 1955 , Split in what was then Yugoslavia in 1956 and 1964 , the cruiser was in Durrës ( Albania ) in 1956 and 1957, in Varna ( Bulgaria ) in 1964 and in Algeria in 1968 .

In June 1967 the ship was in the eastern Mediterranean and carried out combat missions in support of the Egyptian armed forces in the Six Day War and from August 1 to December 31, 1968, the Mikhail Kutuzov supported the Syrian armed forces .

In the explosion of the battleship Novorossiysk in the roadstead of Sevastopol, in which 608 sailors were killed, the Mikhail Kutuzov was the closest ship to Novorossiysk and sent a 35-man rescue team to the battleship to support its crew, killing 27 of them .

Conversion to project 68A

In Sevastopol , the ship was modernized from 1986 to 1989 to project 68A . In addition, the manual W-11 mounts with their 37 mm guns were reinforced with eight 30 mm AK-230 automatic cannons . To do this, the bridge structure was extended aft so that it enclosed the front chimney so that four of the weapons could be set up here. The other four stood on a new superstructure on the forecourt above the battle bridge. The weight of the additional fixtures increased the maximum water displacement from 16,340 tons to 17,790 tons.

Museum ship

In 1987 the ship was transferred to the reserve fleet and the navy was decommissioned on July 3, 1992. From August 23-25, 2001, the cruiser was relocated to the naval base in Novorossiysk and converted into a museum ship. On July 28, 2002, the opening of the Mikhail Kutuzov took place as a museum ship.
