A naval base , also a military port or naval base , is a military property ( military base ) or a port ( naval port ) in which a marine or parts of such are located.

Naval bases are special ports that serve as bases and anchorages for warships . In contrast to trading ports, they are militarily cordoned off areas and do not have places for the exchange of goods such as container terminals or large warehouses. In contrast, they usually have barracks , workshops , training facilities and docks . Many naval bases are also secured by special defenses .
The naval base commandos are responsible for the organization of daily operations. For applications are tractors and pollution vessels kept.
history
The Athenians built the island of Chios in 412 BC. To a trading and naval base. Other peoples or tribes living on the Mediterranean were at times a sea power in parts of the Mediterranean. In ancient times, the Roman Navy had special naval bases in Ravenna , Naples and Aquileia or on Corsica .
As the Roman Empire grew, the Punic no longer viewed it as a trading partner, but more as a competing sea power. There were three Punic Wars (264 to 146 BC) for naval supremacy in the western Mediterranean; they ended with the destruction of Carthage.
In the Middle Ages, the Republic of Venice was the largest naval base with 300 warships.
With the development of fast sailing ships and the discovery of America in 1492 , most of the great sea nations began building navies .
